Critical Reasoning measures your capacity to comprehend, dissect, and evaluate complex written ideas, authorial stances, and philosophical arguments without prior specialized knowledge:
- Argument Structure & Deductive Logic: Identifying conclusions, underlying premises, and logical vulnerabilities (e.g. false causality, hasty generalizations).
- Implicit Assumption Extraction: Determining unstated foundational beliefs necessary for an author’s thesis to remain valid.
- Tone, Stance & Rhetorical Intent: Distinguishing between neutral explanatory journalism, satirical social commentary, and academic advocacy.
- Conflicting Viewpoint Reconciliation: Evaluating multi-party dialogues and determining which new evidence would weaken or strengthen a specific position.

Quantitative Reasoning tests mathematical deduction, scientific model comprehension, and data interpretation under non-calculator conditions:

Do I need advanced Year 12 physics or calculus for Quantitative Reasoning?
No. The mathematical knowledge required does not exceed basic Year 10 / Grade 10 algebra, geometry, and arithmetic. What makes QR challenging is the complex scientific context and lack of a calculator.
How are the questions distributed during the exam?
Questions are intermingled randomly. A candidate might answer two quantitative graph questions, followed by a three-question critical reasoning passage, followed by a physics problem.
Can I use a formula sheet during the exam?
No formula sheets are permitted. Any necessary scientific formulas or constants are provided directly inside the question stimulus.
